Through a vibrant collection of acrylic paintings, this exhibition explores the pressures women face — the unspoken rules about how they should look, dress, behave, and present themselves to the world. High heels, silhouettes, and feminine symbols appear throughout the work not as standards to conform to, but as emblems of individuality, resilience, and self expression.
Each piece reflects the quiet battles women fight daily: the judgement that follows a bold outfit, the scrutiny placed on their bodies, the constant push to be “just right.” Yet within those struggles lies an undeniable strength. These paintings reclaim beauty on women’s own terms, honouring the courage it takes to stand tall, stand out, and stand firm in one’s identity.

About the artist
Toni Gates
I am a vibrant and emerging artist from Hertfordshire. I can work in many different mediums but mainly choose, acrylic or oil. Often my process is intuitive, often beginning without a fixed outcome, allowing the materials to guide me toward unexpected discoveries. My paintings reflect many emotions and are open to interpretation, there is usually a slightly whimsical flow. If I were forced to describe my style I would use the following terms contemporary, expressive, atmospheric, impressionist. My work focuses heavily on texture and movement; attention is paid to natural light sources.
For me art is not only a way to express my feelings and self but, to also provide others with a source of joy and a link to their own memories or inner emotions. Love and light are a big influence on my work.
My greatest hope is that a viewer can relate to my painting and that it evokes the desire to stop and be still, absorbed in that moment. Ultimately, my art is about connection
