Gestures of Love, Lost in Translation Exhibition

Wed 15 Nov - Fri 22 Dec
FREE Entry

Based in Hertfordshire and London. Muneerah’s practice is socially engaged, multidisciplinary and intrinsically informed by her Muslim upbringing and dual British and Iranian heritage. With a specific focus on power dynamics and advocacy, she continues to organise and collaborate on creative projects exploring the female and/or diaspora experience in the UK.

Gestures of Love, Lost in Translation explores Muneerah's relationship with her Iranian mother, who moved to the UK when she got married at 18 years old. The many themes and objects that influenced the creation of the illustrations include expectations on young girls and women as daughters as well as mothers, emotional and domestic abuse, narcissism, heritage, language, culture, religion, old family photos, handmade Persian tablecloths, cooking, dancing and sewing.

Exhibited are two sets of triptych illustrations, a short poem and framed Persian tablecloths. The first triptych, made in 2021, explores the early reflections and emotions of anger after deciding the need to go no contact with her mother.

Nearly three years later, the second triptych and accompanying poem, reflect a more celebratory but bittersweet perspective of her mother and Muneerah herself. The distance proving to give more space for joy while inevitably processing grief.
