Trestle are delighted to be celebrating ’10 Years of Stitch’ with local artist Stephanie Littlechild.
Her collection of art works represents the creative journey pursued since the beginning of her studies 10 years ago and explores her inspiration: fading colours in family photo albums, the pastel blues and greys of English coastal scenes and peeling paint from faded architecture. Using a variety of media and techniques, the paper is pressed and formed, pierced with a needle; and painted with thread. Thoughts and responses become embedded in each surface.
“In my practice I seek to bridge the gap between Fine Art and Contemporary Craft; evoking a conceptual idea through the application of Applied Art skills and techniques. I prefer drawing with a sewing machine to sketching with a pencil. Travelling and experience has shaped and evolved my process but each unique piece remains tactile, delicate, nostalgic. Paper has a unique surface, every mark and stitch leaves a trace, much like our memories leave traces of our experiences.”
Since graduating from the University of Hertfordshire with an MA in Applied and Fine Arts Practice in 2007, Stephanie now works as a secondary level teacher of Art and Textiles alongside her own creative practice.
