Drawing In
A Winter exhibition of ceramics, textiles and print by Kathryn Holt and Karen Tinkler.
About: Kathryn Holt -
Taking her inspiration from the natural world, mid-twentieth century design and microscope images, she makes decorative and installation pieces in her garden workshop. The capacity of clay to remember every movement of the hand, each mark made and texture pressed into it, is what drew Kathryn to ceramics.
Using techniques adapted from printmaking, she makes textured collographs which are impressed into thin sheets of clay, the final design being enhanced by pigments or, when she uses translucent porcelain, revealing itself when lit from behind.

About: Karen Tinkler -
Karen creates individual framed screen prints that are highlighted by overlaying Porcelain Flax Paper Clay motifs. She is inspired by the colour palette of the 1950s/60s and uses old school hand cut stencils and naïve drawn patterns to give her work the feel of a pre-computer era.
Karen's work with ceramics is done using printmaking techniques; she makes the equivalent of a printing plate that is then pressed into the clay. She tends to use rubber sheets which are very easy to cut and adapt. She loves the instant effect of pressing into clay and the happy accidents that happen when cutting by hand.
